Matt the Miller’s Tavern (Carmel, IN): Gluten-Free and Dairy-Free Restaurant Review
Have you tried Matt the Miller’s Tavern in Carmel, IN? It’s the perfect restaurant option for gluten-free and dairy-free individuals! The extensive gluten-free menu and casual but chic decor make it one of our favorites in the northern Indianapolis, Indiana area!
My husband and I live just outside of Indianapolis, IN. We have enjoyed several gluten-free and dairy-free restaurants in Indianapolis, IN within the I-465 circle.
But we hadn’t had a chance to visit Matt the Miller’s Tavern in Carmel, IN (northern Indianapolis) until recently.
We had a wonderful experience and will definitely be back!
Where is Matt the Miller’s Tavern?
Matt the Miller’s Tavern is just south of Carmel, IN’s arts district. It is just a block from the Monon Trail, a fun trail with several hangouts and family-friendly opportunities including a playground, permanent art pieces, and Midtown Plaza (a great hangout spot!).
The Monon takes visitors north to Main Street (where you might enjoy No Label at the Table for gluten-free baked goods or Sub Zero’s dairy-free ice cream!) or south to the Palladium at the Center for Performing Arts or Carmel Christkindlmarkt.
When we visited Matt the Miller’s, we took the Monon trail up to Sub Zero for some ice cream!
Also, Matt the Millers has three additional locations, all in Ohio… one close to the Columbus Zoo in Dublin, OH (Columbus, OH), one in Gemini Place, OH (northern Columbus, OH), and one in West Chester, OH (western Ohio).
Indiana Address: 11 W City Center Drive Carmel, IN 46032
What is the Vibe at Matt the Miller’s Tavern?
Locals know anything located in the city of Carmel, IN is likely going to be very nice. Even a “tavern” is going to have class!
Matt the Miller’s Tavern is an upscale tavern with ball games playing discretely on the screens inside and a casual French vibe on the patio outside. The restaurant is on a corner of a busy intersection with a beautiful fountain offering a quant and yet chic feel to the restaurant’s patio area behind it.
Note: Dogs are not allowed on their patio, unfortunately.
The bathrooms at the restaurant are just as nice! The checkered floor is just the beginning. Each stall in the women’s bathroom is pretty much its own room with sinks (with gold handles!) placed inside each stall. Of course, there is also a large mirror and handwashing station at the front as well.
Do I Need Reservations for Matt the Miller’s Tavern?
While you can make reservations, unless you have a large party, they probably aren’t needed. We made a reservation for a Saturday night for the two of us, but we realized upon arrival that we would have been just fine without one. There were outdoor and indoor seating options still available at 6pm.
Gluten-Free and Dairy-Free Menu Options (So Many!)
Matt the Miller’s has an extensive gluten-free menu with several dairy-free options! Below I will list off the gluten-free and dairy-free items that were on Matt the Miller’s Carmel menu when we visited in August 2023. Of course, the menu may change before your arrival.
Matt the Miller’s Gluten-Free and Dairy-Free Appetizers
- Sauteed Edamame
- Ahi Tacos: corn tortilla (unfortunately also not for me because of the corn) with cilantro slaw, chipotle aioli (which is dairy-free!), tomatoes, and more
Gluten-Free and Dairy-Free Salads
Matt the Miller’s Tavern has several salads that could be made without cheese. I got the Miller Salad with mixed greens, bacon, red onion, blue cheese (which I omitted), grape tomatoes, and a sweet and sour dressing (pictured just below… I got it as a side).
Matt the Miller’s Gluten-Free and Dairy-Free Burgers and Sandwiches
Burgers and sandwiches can be made with Udi’s (dairy-free!) bread. Additionally, if you are vegan, you can order a Beyond Burger Patty for an additional charge.
All burgers and sandwiches are served with a side salad, either the house salad or the Miller salad.
Several of the burgers have an aioli sauce on them. The garlic and truffle aiolis contain dairy, but the others do not. So here are the burger and sandwich options as of our visit…
- California Turkey Club: Turkey, bacon, Swiss cheese (omit), avocado, lettuce, tomato, herb aioli (dairy-free!), and Udi’s gluten-free bun (pictured above)
- Matt’s Burger: Burger, pepper jack cheese (omit), lettuce, tomato, sauce, and Udi’s gluten-free bun
- Garlic Burger: Garlic burger patty, gorgonzola (omit), pickled red onion, arugula, creamy garlic sauce (not sure if this can be made dairy-free), and Udi’s gluten-free bun
- Avocado Burger: Burger, avocado, bacon, chipotle aioli (dairy-free!), lettuce, tomato, and Udi’s gluten-free bun
- Truffle Mushroom Burger: Burger, seared mushrooms, Swiss cheese (omit), fried egg, truffle chive aioli (omit), lettuce, tomato, and Udi’s gluten-free bun.
Matt the Miller’s Flatbreads
Matt the Miller’s Tavern also has gluten-free flatbreads! However, Matt the Miller’s does not have dairy-free cheese. While I have had some pizzas without cheese, I know it can get a little more complicated. There’s little to hold it all together!
Flatbreads may not be the best option.
Matt the Miller’s Entrees
There are several great gluten-free and dairy-free entrees on the gluten-free menu!
- Potato-crusted Walleye with fingerling potatoes and broccoli
- Seared Verlasso Salmon with maple bourbon sauce, mashed potatoes, sauteed spinach, crispy prosciutto, and toasted pumpkin seeds
- Matt’s Fillet: 6oz fillet topped with herb butter (omit) and one side (broccoli, mashed potatoes, salad, and more)
- Barbeque Butter Sirloin: 10oz sirloin with barbeque compound butter, loaded crushed potatoes, and street corn salsa.
Desserts
Unfortunately, the gluten-free desserts that were on the menu when we visited are not dairy-free. They included vanilla ice cream and berries with cream. Dessert was not an option for us.
Our Experience at Matt the Miller’s Tavern in Carmel, IN
Matt the Miller’s Tavern quickly became one of our favorite restaurants!
The restaurant vibe was casual and yet chic. We didn’t feel the need to “dress to the nines” but also found it to be a perfect place for a romantic yet casual date night. We loved the outdoor patio space and we especially loved the prices! Considering the location of the restaurant and the decor, we were pleasantly surprised to pay reasonable prices!
As stated above I got the California Turkey Club and a Miller side salad. Both were delicious! I also got the blue lemonade cocktail (made from rum, blackberry puree, lemon juice, and more). It was perfect!
Kaleb got the fish and chips. Unfortunately, that cannot be made gluten-free. But it may be a great option for someone who does not worry about gluten! (Fortunately, we have had great luck making our own fish and chips when I’m in the mood for them!)
